Our first assignment

You found it!

Now, write in your favorite movie quote and let us know why you decided to share it.

Mr. Kimes:

Every man dies, but not every man really lives.

This is from the movie Braveheart where the lead character, played by Mel Gibson, is trying to get his outmanned Scottish troops pumped up for a battle with the English, who have come to take their land, liberty and lives.  It is a fictional re-telling of the real life story of a man named William Wallace who may have said such a thing, but in reality it is just more Hollywood hype that sells tickets and gets people academy awards.  Well, regardless, I love that scene.

  1. "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn"

This quote is from the all time favorite classic movie "Gone with the Wind", when Rhett Butler turns down Scarlet O'Hara as she finnally realizes her love for him. "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn" through a huge twist into the movie because it is expected that Rhett Butler would run into Scarlets arms and love her again yet instead he shuts the narcissistic Scarlet down! This was also such an amazing quote because in this time period, it was very uncommon for swear words to be used in movies. Prior to the release of the movie, the director was asked to remove the scene or pay $5000 to keep it, and thankfull he kept the scene! This quote topped AFI's best 101 Best movie Quotes of all time!

  3. "Dear Diary, my teen-angst bullshit now has a body count."

This is a quote from the 1988 movie Heathers, starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater. It's a movie about a girl who is a basic high school girl then Christian Slater shows up and they kill her best friend with liquid drainer which leads to some of the creepiest murder sequences I've ever seen in teen movies. But it's, you know, good all American fun.

I like this quote because of reasons. Uh, I promise I'm not homicidal though?

  4. "You Can't handle the truth"
This quote was said by Colonel Nathan JEssup (Jack Nicholson) in the movie "a Few Good Men" I like this quote because some people really cannot handle the truth. Ignorence is bliss.

  6. Movie: A Room with a View (1985)
Speaker: Eleanor Lavish, novelist (Judi Dench)
“A young girl, transfigured by Italy! And why shouldn’t she be transfigured? It happened to the Goths!”

This film, recommended to me by my dear friend K. Mitch, is amazing. I have spoken to Frau about it, too, and she says she thinks every scene in the movie is pure perfection. I cannot help but agree. It was a wonderful movie as a whole. Recently I found out that it is based off a book and am waiting for my mother’s okay to purchase it ($4.99, eBay). But—as I am wont to lapse into—this is a digression of sorts.

Eleanor Lavish, who is a dreamy sort of novelist (staunchly British) and a bit of a gossipmonger, wants to write a book about the young Lucy Honeychurch (Helena Bonham Carter) who is being chaperoned abroad in Italy by her cousin, Charlotte Bartlett, a spinster (Maggie Smith). The quote I have chosen explains why she wishes to write about her. This line, as a semi-historian, is appealing to me. As we all know, the Visigoths and other Germanic tribes sacked Rome in 410 A.D. Yet this line speaks so much more than that fact, which most would find very dull. Constantly in older literature (the best kind, I would say), there are allusions to other subjects such as this, i.e. things that are viewed as common knowledge. Yet even in saying this, which is sort of pompous, as it might imply that all must know about what I’m talking about, it’s still more. Miss Honeychurch (how I wish she would be Mrs Vyse!), is much more defenceless than the fierce Visigoths, and is just—if not more—susceptible to the sway of art and culture of Rome; another victim to the romance of the “eternal city.” It’s certainly implying some romantic developments…

And, if anything else, the words were spoken by the lovely Dame Judi Dench who could say the dumbest of things and make it somehow sound important.

  8. "I've been going to this High School for 7 1/2 years. I'm no dummy. I know High School girls."
    -Better Off Dead
This movie tells the story of a high school student who gets dumped and becomes suicidal. Very dark, but very funny. I like this quote for its humor as well as its nonsense. It also shows that with experience, comes knowledge.

  9. "Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light."

This quote is from the movie Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. I like it because it's really deep and it's just great.

  10. "If he had the guts to knock Mom cold once, then maybe she'd be happy and then she'd stop picking on him."

This quote is from the 1955 film "Rebel Without a Cause" spoken by James Dean. I like it because it's funny and makes perfect sense. It also demostrates how kids set expectations for their parents, and rely on their examples as guidance.

  11. "Leave the gun. Take the cannoli." This quote is from The Godfather after Clemenza and Rocco Lampone finish the planned murder of a man. They pull over the car on the side of the road so Clamenza can go to the bathroom, while Rocco shoots the other guy as they wait. This is said because Clamenza's wife asked for a cannoli, and they make it seem as though shooting a guy is just every day business.

  14. Alexus Said-
Dory: Hey there, Mr. Grumpy Gills. When life gets you down do you wanna know what you've gotta do?
Marlin: No I don't wanna know.
Dory: Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming. What do we do? We swim, swim.
    Marlin: Dory, no singing.
Dory: Ha, ha, ha, ha, ho. I love to swim. When you want to swim you want to swim.
Marlin: Now I'm stuck with that song... Now it's in my head.
    Dory: Sorry.

I like this quote because it's funny and because it is a good quote to use to perservere through life. When life gets tought you just gotta keep swimming.

  15. My favorite quote has got to be:
"A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men"
    or:
"We are the music makers and we are the dreamers of dreams"
both of which were spoken by Willy Wonka in the 1971 version of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

I enjoyed these quotes because they stuck out to me when I watched the movie a short time ago and I found that both of them reflect a dreamy sense of life that we, as ever growing humans, tend to forget when responsibilities in our lives begin to grow larger and larger. I appreciate

Sean Parker: "Ahhh you see, the shoe's on the other, uh, table which has turned."

This is from the social network. It is my favorite quote because it not only makes me laugh but also because it utilizes the input-output style of conversation in a self conscience way.

  19. My favorite movie quote (that has any significant relevence) is "I don't think i can shoot my mum, best friend, flatmate, and girlfriend in the same day" From the 2004 zomromcom Shaun of the Dead. It is the story of a man-child who is forced to grow up through the worst scenario: a zombie apocalypse. He was forced to sever his ties to his friends and family that held him back from being an adult (and by "sever" we mean they were turned into zombies and had to be put down)and after severing so many ties he couldn't go through with killing himself and his girlfriend when backed into a corner by zombies. every man has his limits.

-Syndrome, in the Pixar movie The Incredibles

Syndrome is pretty wise. Twistedly evil, but clever nonetheless. And this is actually a pretty well put together movie. This line is honestly kind of intense.
